good directions asked:
My daughter has 2 rabbits and they are in a big wire cage and I am worried that it will not be warm enough for them this winter . I would like to find a big hutch that has plenty of room for them to run around since the cage they are in now is really big. It must be an outside hutch because my husband says no to rabbits in the house.

Your local feed store is sure to have them but they’re also be sure to be quite expensive. If you go take a look at some and they’re more than what you want to spend then I’d build around your current cage if I were you. A simple three sided structure (with a roof) that faces away from the direction of the wind would be ideal. If you’re worried about predators then add a framed steel mesh door with a lock.
To keep your rabbits warm enough in winter add hay (bought by the bale at the feed store for about $15) to their cage. Stuff the cage with hay. they’ll burrow in and be nice and cozy. It’s great edible insulation and they’ll have fun making their burrow. Additionally (don’t know where you live so I don’t know how cold it gets but…) you can cover the hutch with a painters canvas (Hope Depot) and this also helps more than you would think.
I don’t like prefabricated wooden hutches because, while they look pretty in the store, the rabbits ultimately chew on the wood and urinate on it as well. They are not very sanitary. Better to go with building around their current cage.
